Consumer confidence to highet level since 2006

British consumers are at their most confident in seven years, according to a new survey by Nielsen, with more consumers saying it is a good time to spend money than at any point since 2006. The Nielsen consumer confidence index jumped eight points to 87 in the third quarter.

The survey found that 39% of those questioned believe it is a good time to spend, up five percentage points on the quarter. Further, only 63% said they have altered their behaviour to cut spending, the lowest level since mid-2010.

Nielsen said it believes the positive feeling is in part due to soaring house prices making households feel richer. Confidence may also have been boosted by job security, with 31% saying they feel upbeat about job prospects.
