Digital food app introduces a smell-able menu

Spanish chef Andoni Luiz Aduriz from the three Michelin starred restaurant ‘Mugaritz’ has developed a novel way for diners to smell dishes on the menu before ordering with a new smartphone app and plug-in diffuser.

This revolutionary technology was developed in conjunction with City University of London and was launched at Madrid Fusion last month. According to the inventors, the digital food app will open up new vistas for people around the world who may not have the opportunity to physically dine in the restaurant to virtually experience the real smell of gourmet food prepared by one of the world’s top chefs.
Based on an app called ‘Scentee’ this culinary invention leads the way for any user to virtually prepare a recipe at home and together with a diffuser which is attached to an Apple iphone, they can enjoy and compare the aromas of their finished dish with that of a three star Michelin chef. While there is still some way to go before the concept is fully commercialised, the good news is that the technology is available. The app is free to download and the diffuser and scented cartridges can be ordered online (www.scentee.com) at a cost of $35 and $5 respectively.

The concept of digitising smell has multiple applications and there are already suggestions of scentagram-style social media apps that will allow friends to send one another scented messages. In terms of online grocery shopping, the idea of smelling fresh bread, or indeed new season strawberries, will bring a whole new dimension to how we shop. In the meantime, we’ll have to wait patiently for the digital taste app to follow!
